Epi|taph, das; -s, -e, Epi|ta|phi|um, das; -s, …ien [lat. epitaphium < griech. epitáphion, eigtl. = zum Grab Gehörendes]:
1. (bildungsspr.)
a) Grabinschrift;
b) Gedenktafel mit Inschrift für einen Verstorbenen an einer Kirchenwand od. einem Pfeiler.
2. (kath. Kirche) in den orthodoxen Kirchen am Karfreitag aufgestelltes Christusbild.

Epitaph
 
[griechisch, eigentlich »zum Grab Gehörendes«] das, -/...phi|en,
 
 1) Antike: Grabrede, im alten Athen öffentliche Trauerrede auf die für das Vaterland Gefallenen, die von einem Redner in staatlichem Auftrag gehalten wurde, z. B. das Epitaph des Perikles 431 v. Chr. (nach Thukydides, 2. Buch, 35-46); in Antike und Mittelalter auch Grabschrift, besonders in Form eines Epigramms.
 
 2) bildende Kunst: Gedächtnismal für einen Verstorbenen (mit Inschrift); das aus der Verbindung des Totengedenkens mit dem Andachtsbild entstandene Erinnerungsmal wurde an einer Innenwand, einem Pfeiler, auch einer Außenwand einer Kirche angebracht und ist in der Regel nicht identisch mit der Grabstelle. Das Epitaph kam ab dem 14. Jahrhundert meist in Form einer Grabplatte vor, erhielt in der Renaissance eine architektonische Rahmung und oft auch die Porträtfigur des Verstorbenen. Im Barock wurde es besonders reich ausgebildet. Der Klassizismus kehrte zum Inschriftenepitaph ohne figürlichem Schmuck zurück und bezog seine Vorbilder meist von antiken Grabstelen.
